What's the difference between a prom and formal dress?

I’m shopping for prom, but starting to get confused as to what separates a prom dress from a regular formal dress, or a homecoming dress….I mean, can any dress with a bit of tulle or satin be a prom dress? Can you have a knee-length dress? In short, what exactly defines a prom dress?

The prom is the event you buy a formal dress for, right? It can be long or knee length or shorter. Fabric, design, and cut determine whether it is formal. My daughter wore a BCBG above- the- knee tiered dress for her prom, and she was the only one without a long gown, but it was a formal dress.

A prom dress is a dress you buy for the prom, but you don’t have to wear it only there. A formal dress is a dress you buy for any formal occasion. Of course where semi-formal dress ends and a formal dress starts is hard to tell. Pretty much any nice dress that isn’t a ball gown can be both a formal and semi formal dress.
No one says you have to have satin or tulle in your dress for the prom. The dress you select will be selected for many reasons. what looks good on you, how dressy you want to be, what is the theme of the prom this year, what are your friends wearing, do you want to be daring or modest. The reasons are endless.
